Tough race for the Radicals after poor qualifying at IndianapolisAugust 17, 2016
Finnish Sim Racing Association (FiSRA) organized sim racing booth and Finnish Sim Racing Championship finals (Sim racing eSM 2016) event at Assembly Summer 2016 LAN event which is the largest computer festival in Northern Europe. Prize pool was over $3500 and participation was unbelievable. Over 2000 people gathered up to play games and at the same time, get to know what is this thing called 'sim racing'.
I had great opportunity to be part of the finals and represent Sim racing at the booth. Male, female, young, old; everyone were interested what we do and what it's all about. We had Foracer motion simulators rigs people can get on and try, we offered triple screens, GT Omega, Obutto, Oculus Rift and the feedback was astonishing.
Saturday was the race day. FiSRA and their sponsors had been prepared 20 sim rigs to compete in the finals of the Sim racing eSM. First race of the championship was held at Laguna Seca on 5th of June and only 20 best Finnish sim racers got the ticket to race the finals. We had over 45 peoples driving in the first three races to battle for the points.
I qualified in the 9th position. I had great pace to even get to top 5 but unfortunately I'm always having trouble snatching that clean lap and couldn't execute as good as I would have wanted. First race out of two consisted 19 laps and the racing was just phenomenal. To race against the best Finnish sim racers, you don't need to lose your focus to think about "are they going to divebomb" or "are they gonna pinch me off the track?". The cringiest part for me was that top 6 got reversed grid and I was already 6th, but made stupid mistake when there was 5 seconds gap in front and behind me. I just lost focus and basically finished 1,2 seconds behind top 6 which meant I had to start 7th for the second race. I felt very disappointed because that one little spin cost me basically the whole final. It is tough when you make mistakes in this kind of situations.
In the second race I just didn't have enough pace to overtake everyone. If I'd started from the pole, I would have definitely been fighting for the podium or even win but my pace just wasn't there. And when fighting with Joni Törmälä lost my braking point I lost the whole pack and ended up 7th which was little disappointing. I'm pretty I should have just started practicing little earlier.
Overally the event was huge success, I had such a great time with my friends and this is just the beginning. Since this first event was successful, who knows what FiSRA will bring next time - most likely something even bigger.
